July 2010 Archives

Bestselling authors, Tony Dungy (The Mentor Leader--Nonfiction) and Victoria Christopher Murray (Sins of the Mother--Fiction) lead the bestsellers list of Black Christian authors on the August 2010 edition of the Black Christian News/Black Christian Book Company National Bestsellers List. BCNN1.com has also released the third edition of a new bestsellers list called The BCNN1/Amazon.com Kindle E-BOOK Bestsellers List. This list ranks African-American Christian e-books based upon their sales rankings in the Amazon Kindle e-book store. Please note that a significant number of the books that BCNN1/BCBC rank are not listed as e-books on Amazon.com. In order to have a fair E-BOOK bestsellers list, BCNN1/BCBC want to encourage all authors and publishers to make sure their books are sold through Amazon.com Kindle.

BlackCBC.com has partnered with Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and CBD.com so that you can visit BlackCBC.com and purchase your books from any one of these online retailers and get the best price and service that these fine companies are known for. You can also purchase e-books via Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook through BlackCBC.com. If you order your books through BlackCBC.com, you will be supporting a black Christian bookstore, black Christian authors, and on top of that, we give 15% of all profits to the following mission agencies:

  • Save Africa's Children
  • World Vision
  • Samaritans Purse
  • Jewish Voice
  • LIFE Today
  • Jews for Jesus
  • CBN
  • Salvation Army
  • St. Jude Children's Hospital
  • Fellowship Tract League
  • Mission Waco
  • Parkland Children's Hospital

Treat your editors like the coach from any sports team because the editor knows their audience and only rejects writing with a good reason--even if you never learn the specifics.

Do you want to be a successful blogger?

I do. I might be getting a bit obsessed with it, actually.

Post ideas pop into my head unexpectedly. I keep a long running list of ideas for improving my blog.

I also study how the most successful bloggers got where they are, and I pore over every word that they write.
One of the most common laments in the business world is, "But now that I have a website for my book/business, how do I get people to find it?"  Putting up the website is only half the battle; unless people are able to find it, you won't be improving your business.  Here's how to fly to the top of the search engines--and stay there:
If you are a writer and you are not blogging then you should be. While many people simply dismiss blogging because of its description as a web diary they are missing a lot of traffic and revenue generating opportunities every day. Many internet entrepreneurs work hard to publish their blogs but as a writer you have the ability to easily create the content you need without needing to hire out. In fact, publishing a blog can be the perfect way for you to profit from your writing.
When book publicity firms consider taking on new clients and developing new campaigns for books, the first question usually asked of the client is what kind of book distribution system is currently in place.
As an author, have you had trouble with how to sell books in face to face meetings with customers?

Most writers are not salesmen by nature. This is why many signings turn into a big waste of time for self-published authors. It is embarrassing, sitting at a table in a book store all by yourself for an hour or more, staring at the shelves, twiddling your thumbs, and trying to avoid looks from the sales clerks. If you want to learn how to sell books and make your signings worthwhile, you need to understand how your customer will perceive you, the unknown author with your stack of books.
Surely you have heard the saying, "You never have a second chance to make a first impression." Not only should your book communicate excellence and professionalism, but so should everything related to it. Here are some tips about how to package yourself like a pro.
These days, having an Internet presence is a must; there is no choice in the matter, especially if you're looking for ways to promote your literary wares.

What I'd like to do with this commentary is discuss various social media platforms and tools you can use to promote your work, and then ask you what you use and their effectiveness. The more we talk and share, the more we all can be successful in our literary endeavors.
Reviews are the least expensive and most effective form of book promotion. More than 300 titles are published each day. There is no way anyone can know and rank them. That is why bookstores, libraries and readers rely so heavily on book reviews. Reviews sell books.
How do you get journalists to write articles about you?  In the past year, I've been featured in over 100 magazines and newspapers worldwide (including many of the biggies, from The New York Times to Fortune Magazine).  How do you get that kind of attention for your book or business?  Here are my top techniques.  (See my special report, www.PublishingGame.com/mediareport.htm for an even deeper look at how to maximize your media attention.)
Make no mistake about it: I am an Apple fan. I own several Mac laptops, iPhones, and iPods. I even bought an AppleTV--and love it. When the iPad was announced, I watched Steve Jobs' announcement and the online Guided Tours. I ordered one the first day I could do so. I purchased the 64GB WiFi (non-3G) version.
Before the Internet came on the scene, buying books was a very "physical" experience. People would wander through bookstores at their leisure picking up books that caught their eye. They'd hold the book, read the back cover or introduction, and flip through the pages to glance at the chapter titles. With the dawn of ebooks, that all changed.
Attempting to market your book on the Internet without any guidance is like attempting to become a master chef after one cooking class. However, with a little guidance and a little practice, anyone can get started marketing their book online.
It's Saturday afternoon. Your partner has taken the kids to the park. You have a whole hour to write. Instead of which, you sit, staring out the window like Rodin's Thinker in jeans and a yellow sweatshirt. Why aren't you writing? A tiny item called Perfection Syndrome. You want whatever you write in this precious hour to be perfect.
Christian fiction books are becoming more and more popular every day. However, there are many people voicing out their concerns that Christian fiction is not what it used to be. To make it easier, let's define what this means.
Writing Christian articles can be a bit challenging to say the least.

There's the fear of not being well-versed in scripture or not having a proper grasp on Christian Doctrine, as well as the notion of all the good ideas being already taken.

Roy SmithDr Roy Etienne Smith has been no stranger to abuse, trauma, or tragedy. Having been a victim of molestation and abuse, he also lost a sister to AIDS, and a mother to Cancer.   Sent to prison and back, but God had a plan! (A federal prison reunited him with his biological father when they were assigned to room together.)  "All things do work together for good."

Dr Smith accepted his call into the Gospel Ministry October of 1989, in the Church of God In Christ (COGIC), at the age of 16. Having served for many years as a minister of music, and youth minister, God began to perfect his divine call and gifting with this Man of God.  He was publicly ordained by Pastor Rod Parsley and later consecrated into the Five Fold Ministry by Bishop/Apostle Otis Carswell. This author/teacher has been used by God to birth a bible school, various ministries, and community programs.

His testimony was a feature on the 700 Club.  He also has been an invited guest on the Daystar Television Network with Marcus & Joni Lamb, as well as Cornerstone Television.
