Writing is a solitary venture for the unpublished book writer. Most fill their days writing, rewriting and waiting for the next rejection slip, only to have the process start all over again. At best, a writer might get feedback from a critique group about their latest manuscript or read about the publishing news from an Internet posting.
That is why new writers need to get away from the computers and a writer's workshops is the perfect venue. Many writers orginizations sponser annual workshops, like the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) or the Pikes Peak Writers. There are conferences for every genre of writer -- from mystery to childrens' to workshops specifically for freelancers.

Benefit #1: Hang Out with Publishing Professionals
A writer's workshop is the first place many writers get to meet editors and agents. It is a chance to get real face time with professionals. Although it is bad manners to thrust an unrequested manuscript at one these professionals, there is nothing wrong with talking about a one's latest work-in-progress. Writers' Workshops are also the place to meet and network with other writers.

Benefit #2: Discover New Publishing Trends
Most large workshops include a session specifically about publishing trends. However, even without a specific panel discussion hottest publishing trends or changes, editors, agents and other writers will gab. And, that gabbing may generate more candid perspectives and insight than any panel discussion.
